What are Wegovy injections?

The Wegovy injection is a prescription weight loss medicine containing semaglutide that works in the body to reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying and help people feel more satisfied after eating. Wegovy injections are taken once a week and are licensed for weight management and reduction of serious cardiovascular events (2).

In the UK, Wegovy injections are available in six different strengths and come in two different types of injection pens, depending on the strength:

FlexTouch pens come in 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg doses. Each pen lasts a month and contains four weekly doses (2).
Single-dose Wegovy pens are only used for the 7.2mg dose. Each pen contains one weekly dose, so you’ll receive four pens for a month’s supply (3).

Both pen types contain the same active ingredient, Semaglutide, but are used slightly differently. Always use the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medication for full instructions on how to inject Wegovy with your pen type.

How do Wegovy injections work for weight loss?

Wegovy injections work by mimicking the GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone your body naturally makes after eating. GLP-1 targets brain areas involved in regulating appetite (hunger) and blood sugar. This can help you feel less hungry, eat fewer calories and lose weight.

How Wegovy works with your body

Wegovy weight loss medication works with your body to help you lose weight, mimicking natural hormonal processes to:

Reduce cravings: Wegovy injections can reduce food cravings (food noise) and your preference for high-fat foods, which can make it easier to eat a healthy, balanced diet and control how much you eat.
Makes you feel full: Wegovy works on the part of the brain that controls hunger, helping you feel full sooner and reducing how much you eat. Many people find they feel satisfied with smaller portions and less hungry between meals.
Slows digestion: Wegovy injections can slow down digestion by keeping the food you eat in your stomach for longer (known as delayed gastric emptying). It is thought that this also contributes to feelings of fullness.
Helps regulate blood sugar levels: When blood sugar levels are high (often after eating specific foods), Semaglutide increases insulin secretion to help bring them back down. This may prevent excess sugar from being stored as fat.

How long do Wegovy injections take to work?

Semaglutide starts working from your first Wegovy injection, but weight loss happens gradually.

You may notice changes to your appetite, food cravings or how full you feel within the first few weeks. But most people don’t see much change on the scales during their first month.

This is because Wegovy starts at a low 0.25mg dose, which is primarily used to help your body adjust to treatment before gradually increasing towards the maintenance dose. Weight loss often becomes more noticeable as treatment continues and your dose increases.

Don't be discouraged if you don't lose much weight straight away. Wegovy is a longer-term treatment, and weight loss usually builds gradually over several months rather than happening all at once.

How long do Wegovy injections last?

Semaglutide is broken down slowly, with around half of the medication still in your system one week after each dose (2-3). This allows one Wegovy injection to be taken once every 7 days, providing a steady effect throughout the week to help control your appetite and support weight loss.

To provide this steady effect, you'll continue taking Wegovy once a week for as long as your prescriber recommends treatment. Often, treatment is continued even after reaching your target weight as a maintenance therapy to help you keep the weight you have lost off.

How long Wegovy pens last depends on the pen design. Each FlexTouch pen contains four weekly doses, while the 7.2mg Single-dose pens contain one dose each.

Who are Wegovy injections for?

In the UK, Wegovy injections are licensed for adults who (2-3):

Have a BMI above 30
Have a BMI above 27 and a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, or type 2 diabetes.

Wegovy is also licensed for some adolescents aged 12 years and over, but Oxford Online Pharmacy only provides Wegovy treatment to adults aged 18 and over.

Can I get Wegovy injections on the NHS?

Yes, Wegovy injections are available on the NHS. But while the NHS route offers the cheapest Wegovy in the UK, the NHS uses a more strict set of criteria than the licensed criteria explained above, based on NICE guidance (4).

The guidance recommends that Wegovy is generally only considered an option for people who have:

At least one weight-related health condition AND
A BMI of 35 or more (lower BMI thresholds apply to some ethnic groups)

NHS access also varies by location and the local services available, and there are often long waiting lists to receive Wegovy injections. You also cannot get Wegovy injections from your GP. You must first be referred to a specialist weight management service.

For this reason, many people prefer to buy Wegovy online privately through Oxford Online Pharmacy.

How effective are Wegovy injections?

Several scientific studies have shown that Wegovy injections can support significant weight loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

In the STEP 1 clinical trial, people taking Semaglutide 2.4mg lost around 15 to 17% of their starting body weight on average after 68 weeks (5). The trial also found that:

86.4% achieved 5% weight loss or more
69.1% achieved 10% weight loss or more
50.5% achieved 15% weight loss or more

The 2.4mg Wegovy injection is the standard maintenance dose. But the higher 7.2mg dose in the new single-dose pen is also available for some adults who need extra support.

In the STEP UP trial comparing the two maintenance options, people taking 7.2mg Semaglutide lost more weight. Average weight loss was 19 to 21% of baseline body weight after 72 weeks of treatment, with around 1 in 3 achieving over 25% weight loss (1).

How much weight can I lose with Wegovy?

Clinical studies are an indicator of what average weight loss looks like, but they are conducted in highly monitored and controlled environments, adherence to diet and exercise, and accurate dosing under study conditions.

Your own results may be higher or lower than the trial averages. How much weight you lose can depend on your starting weight, what maintenance dose you reach, how long you stay on treatment, your diet and physical activity, and how your body responds to Wegovy.

Weight loss also tends to happen gradually, so your results after a few months may look very different from your results after a year or longer. Every weight loss journey is unique, so it’s best to use the data as guidance instead of a source of complete truth for yourself.

What are the cardiovascular benefits of Wegovy?

Beyond the weight loss benefits, Wegovy also has a separate licensed indication for reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in certain adults (6).

In the SELECT trial, all participants were overweight or living with obesity and had established cardiovascular disease. Those taking Wegovy 2.4mg reduced the risk of cardiovascular death and non-fatal heart attack or stroke by 20% compared with the placebo (7).

These benefits apply specifically to people who are overweight or living with obesity who already have heart disease, and shouldn’t be interpreted as applying to everyone taking Wegovy injections. Wegovy is also not a substitute for existing heart medications, so a consultation with your doctor or prescriber is always needed.

Wegovy injection alternatives

Wegovy injections are one of several prescription medicines for weight loss. The two main ones people consider are:

Mounjaro – another injection, but a different medication. Like Wegovy, Mounjaro is injected once a week and works by helping you feel fuller for longer. But it does this by mimicking GLP-1 and another hormone called GIP. Head-to-head trials show this dual action leads to up to 22.5% body weight loss (8).
Wegovy pills – the same medication, but in tablet form. Wegovy pills contain the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections (Semaglutide), taken as a once-daily tablet rather than a weekly injection. Both produced similar weight loss in clinical trials, but you must know how to take the Wegovy pill correctly for it to work properly (9).

Eli Lilly’s weight loss tablet, Foundayo, another oral GLP-1, is now also approved in the UK (10). Or for anyone who isn’t suitable for GLP-1s or prefers a medicine that works in the gut, there’s Orlistat. It blocks around 30% of the fat you eat from being absorbed, helping you to lose weight (11).

How to use Wegovy Weight Loss Injections

Wegovy injections dosage guide

Wegovy injections are taken once a week, starting at the lowest 0.25mg strength. Your dose is gradually increased each month towards the 2.4mg maintenance dose. This step-by-step approach lets your body adapt to the medication gradually and reduces the risk of unwanted side effects.

For adults who had a BMI of 30 or above when starting treatment, the dose may be increased to 7.2mg once weekly if needed, after at least 4 weeks at Wegovy 2.4mg. Not everyone will need or be suitable for the higher 7.2mg dose.

Wegovy dose schedule

The usual dose schedule for Wegovy is:

Weeks 1 - 4: Wegovy 0.25mg
Weeks 5 - 8: Wegovy 0.5mg
Weeks 9 - 12: Wegovy 1mg
Weeks 13 - 16: Wegovy 1.7mg
From week 17: Wegovy 2.4mg – standard maintenance dose
If needed: Wegovy 7.2mg – after at least 4 weeks at 2.4mg for eligible adults

The above dosing schedule is the quickest you can move through towards your maintenance dose. If you experience significant side effects during dose escalation, your prescriber may recommend delaying an increase or returning to your previous dose until your symptoms get better.

Some people may also not need to reach the 2.4mg Wegovy injection. Many people successfully lose weight at 1.7mg or 1mg Wegovy and find this provides a better balance between weight loss and tolerability. Your prescriber will help you find the right maintenance option for you.

How to take Wegovy injections

Wegovy is injected under the skin once each week into your stomach, thigh or upper arm (12-13). You can take your injection at the time of day that suits you best, with or without food, but you should take it on the same day every week.

It’s normal to be anxious when getting ready to inject for the first time. You can always refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for your pen, YouTube videos or local pharmacist for help when injecting.

The FlexTouch and Single-dose pens work differently, so how you prepare and administer your injection depends on the pen type you have.

How to use a Wegovy FlexTouch pen

Wegovy FlexTouch pens contain four weekly doses of Semaglutide, so you’ll use the same pen for four weeks. For each injection, you'll need to attach a new needle, check the flow if required, select your prescribed dose and inject it under the skin.

After injecting, remove and safely dispose of the needle and replace the pen cap onto the pen. Never store your FlexTouch pen with a needle still attached.

How to use a Wegovy Single-Dose pen

The Single-Dose Wegovy pen contains one pre-filled weekly dose of 7.2mg Semaglutide. You’ll receive four pens in your order, and you’ll use one pen for each injection.

This pen works differently from the FlexTouch, so make sure you know how to use the new Wegovy 7.2mg pen when switching to the single-dose device. The pen already has the needle attached and the dose selected. After injecting, the whole pen can be disposed of with the needle still attached.

Whichever Wegovy pen you use:

Washing your hands before starting
Reading the user instructions thoroughly before injecting
Rotate where you inject rather than using exactly the same spot each week
Giving yourself plenty of time on your injection day so you aren’t rushed
Take Wegovy on the same day each week where possible

How to store Wegovy injections

Wegovy injections usually need to be stored in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C. Never freeze Wegovy or use a pen that has been frozen (2-3).

Your Wegovy pens no longer arrive cold. Both FlexTouch and 7.2mg Single-dose pens can be delivered in the UK at temperatures below 30°C for up to 48 hours (14). Once your order arrives, put your pens in the fridge as soon as possible.

Storage instructions then depend on which Wegovy pen you have.

Wegovy FlexTouch pen storage

FlexTouch pens should then be kept refrigerated until you open them to administer the first injection. Once opened, it can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for up to 6 weeks. Always keep it out of direct sunlight and direct heat sources.

When travelling, your FlexTouch pen can be kept at room temperature (up to 30°C) for 6 weeks, or you can use a cool bag with an ice pack, where needed. Never pack in your plane hold luggage as the medication may freeze, leaving it unusable.

Wegovy Single-dose pen storage

While best kept in the fridge, single-dose pens can be kept out of the fridge for up to 28 days (below 30 °C). After this time, the pen should be discarded even if it hasn’t been used. Always keep it out of direct sunlight and direct heat sources.

When travelling, never pack your Single-dose pens in plane hold luggage as this may freeze the medication, leaving it unsuitable for use.

Side effects of Wegovy Weight Loss Injections

What are the side effects of Wegovy injections?

Wegovy injections can cause side effects. Not everyone experiences them, but side effects can be more common when starting Wegovy, or when increasing your dose.

Below we’ve listed some common and some serious side effects. This list is not exhaustive. For a full list of possible medication side effects, warnings, and contraindications, refer to the relevant patient information leaflet:

Common Wegovy side effects

The most common side effects of Wegovy affect the digestive system and include (2-3,15):

Nausea
Diarrhoea
Vomiting
Constipation
Stomach pain

These digestive symptoms may affect more than 1 in 10 people taking Wegovy injections (2).

Other common side effects include dizziness, indigestion, heartburn, burping, bloating, wind, gallstones and skin reactions at the injection site. Hair loss can also occur, but it is more common at the higher 7.2mg Wegovy dose (2-3).

Serious side effects of Wegovy

There are some serious side effects of Wegovy that need urgent medical attention (2-3).

Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

Pancreatitis. Signs include severe pain in the stomach and back which does not go away, often accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Stop taking Wegovy and contact a doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.
Kidney or urinary stones. Signs may include back or lower abdomen pain, difficulty in urination or a change in the colour of your urine.

Rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 1,000 people)

Severe allergic reactions (eg anaphylactic reaction, angioedema). Signs include breathing problems, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat with difficulty swallowing and a fast heartbeat. Get immediate medical help if you experience these symptoms.

Very rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION). A condition that causes sudden loss of vision. Contact your doctor straight away or call 111 if you experience sudden loss or rapidly worsening vision.

Wegovy injections warnings

If you take oral contraceptives. Wegovy does not reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. But if you vomit within 3-4 hours of taking your pill or experience severe diarrhoea, it may not be fully absorbed. In these cases, you should use backup contraception (like condoms) (16-17)

If you have kidney problems. Side effects like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can cause dehydration, which can sometimes worsen kidney function. Make sure that you drink enough fluids if you experience these side effects (2-3).

If you take epilepsy medicines. Vomiting or severe diarrhoea, two common Wegovy side effects, may affect how well medicines taken orally are absorbed. If you take medication to control seizures, speak to your doctor if you're unable to keep your medication down.

If you’re having surgery or a procedure under general anaesthesia. Tell your healthcare team that you take Wegovy, as delayed stomach emptying may increase the risk of stomach contents entering the lungs during the procedure (2-3).

Taking Wegovy injections with other medications

Before you buy Wegovy online, you should share information on all medicines you take in your consultation. This includes prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements.

While Wegovy is generally safe to take alongside other medications, care may be needed if you take:

Insulin or sulfonylureas: Taking these alongside Wegovy can increase your risk of low blood sugar. You may need to reduce your dose when you start treatment with Wegovy (2).
Warfarin or other coumarin anticoagulants: More frequent INR monitoring is recommended when starting Semaglutide (2).
Other GLP-1 medicines or medicines containing Semaglutide: These aren't recommended alongside Wegovy (2).

For menopausal women taking HRT, you should consider changing oral oestrogen to transdermal oestrogen and also increasing the dose of progesterone for 4 weeks after initiation of a GLP-1 or after any dose change. You should discuss this further with your GP or prescribing Doctor (17).

Who should not take Wegovy injections?

Wegovy isn't suitable for everyone, which is why our prescribers will review your full medical history during your consultation.

You shouldn't use Wegovy if you (2-3):

Are allergic to Semaglutide or any of the other ingredients in the pen
Are planning to get pregnant, pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are planning on getting pregnant, make sure you have completely stopped using Wegovy at least 2 months before trying to conceive.
Have severe gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying)
Have end-stage kidney disease

Wegovy may also not be suitable or may require extra monitoring if you:

Have previously had pancreatitis
Have diabetic retinopathy, particularly if you use insulin
Have severe liver impairment
Have severe heart failure (NYHA class IV)

Having one of these conditions doesn't necessarily mean you can't take Wegovy. Your prescriber will consider the risks and benefits based on your individual circumstances.

Any other health conditions that may require caution when taking Wegovy or specialist review will always be decided with your prescriber.

If you're searching for the cheapest Wegovy in the UK, price shouldn't be the only consideration. Your treatment should include appropriate clinical assessment and ongoing support.
: No. If you're new to Wegovy, you'll usually start with the 0.25mg dose once a week for 4 weeks (2). Your dose is then gradually increased towards the maintenance dose. Starting low gives your body time to adjust to the medicine and helps reduce the risk of side effects.
: Your prescriber will let you know. The standard Wegovy schedule increases your dose every 4 weeks, from 0.25mg to 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and then the 2.4mg maintenance dose. But if you’re experiencing significant side effects, your prescriber may recommend delaying a dose increase. Find out more about the right dose of Wegovy for you.
: If you miss a Wegovy dose, take it as soon as possible within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the dose and take your next injection on your usual day. Don’t double your dose to make up for the missed one (2). If you miss more than two weeks of doses, speak to us for guidance.
: You can help ease nausea on Wegovy by eating smaller, balanced meals, drinking plenty of water, avoiding rich or fatty foods, and getting fresh air. Nausea often improves by itself as your body gets used to your current dose. If it doesn’t or your side effects are severe, contact your prescriber.
: You don’t routinely need vitamin supplements just because you take Wegovy. The priority is a varied, nutrient-rich diet that meets your nutritional needs even as your food intake decreases. If struggling to eat a balanced diet or are concerned about a deficiency, speak to a healthcare professional.
: There’s no best exercise to do while taking Wegovy. Aim for a combination of aerobic activity, such as walking, swimming or cycling, and strength training, such as lifting weights or bodyweight exercises. Strength training can be particularly useful during weight loss to help maintain muscle mass.
: No, based on current evidence, Wegovy doesn’t reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills (2). But vomiting or severe diarrhoea can affect how well your pill is absorbed. If this happens, it's generally recommended to use back-up contraception. Refer to your pill information leaflet for more advice.
: Reaching your goal weight doesn’t mean you need to stop Wegovy. Wegovy in the UK is licensed for weight loss and weight maintenance, so your prescriber may recommend continuing treatment to help you keep off the weight you’ve lost. If you decide you do want to stop, speak to your prescriber first.
: When you stop using Wegovy, the effects the medicine had on your appetite gradually wear off. Many people find it harder to maintain their healthy eating habits, and weight regain is common. In clinical trials, people put back on around two-thirds of the weight they’d lost within a year of stopping (18).
: Yes. In the UK, Wegovy injections are licensed for reducing the risk of cardiovascular events in certain adults with obesity and as a treatment for a type of liver disease (2-3,6,19). Research has also found improvements in pain from knee osteoarthritis, physical function, and quality of life (20-21).
: Wegovy and Mounjaro both lead to significant weight loss, but head-to-head studies suggest that Mounjaro causes greater weight loss on average. People taking the maximum dose of Mounjaro lost an average of 20.2% of their starting weight after 72 weeks, compared with 13.7% with Wegovy (1).
: No, not necessarily. While Mounjaro led to more weight loss in clinical trials, the best treatment for you depends on your medical history and your individual response to treatment and side effects. : Yes, most people can change from Wegovy to Mounjaro and vice versa. This should only be done with guidance from one of our prescribers. Although both are similar medications, they contain different active ingredients, so switching between them isn’t as simple as stopping and starting.

Some people taking GLP-1 injections for weight loss have reported temporary blurred vision. This can happen during the first few weeks of treatment and is usually due to changes in blood sugar levels, or dry eyes caused by dehydration.

There’s usually nothing to worry about, but if you experience any sudden or severe changes to your vision, contact your optician immediately (NHS 111 for out-of-hours) and let them know you’re taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication.
